         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Name of Mission:</strong> Luna 2<br><strong>Type:</strong> Unmanned probe<br><strong>Date: </strong>12th September 1959 - 13th September 1959<br><strong>Country of Origin:</strong> USSR<br><strong>Purpose:</strong> To test for various forms of radiation between the earth and the Moon.<br><strong>Results:</strong> Little or no radiation was measured by the probe on its journey to the moon.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Name of Mission:</strong> Surveyor 1<br><strong>Type:</strong> lunar lander<br><strong>Date: June 1st 1966</strong><br><strong>Country of Origin:</strong> U.S.A<br><strong>Purpose:</strong> Surveyor 1, the first of a series of seven robotic spacecraft sent to the moon to gather data in preparation for NASA's Apollo missions, was the first spacecraft to make a true soft landing on the moon. As such, it was one of the great successes of NASA's early lunar and interplanetary program.<br><strong>Results: </strong>On 2 June 1966 at 6:17:36 UT (1:17:36 a.m. EST) at about 3 m/s.The aluminum honeycomb block made a "cookie cutter" imprint on the moon just below the spacecraft.
