1. Watch Betty Friedan and Phyllis Schlafly debate the ERA on Good Morning America. It's about 24 minutes longer, and is a fascinating encounter, particularly because for all the oddness of Schlafly's views, they are presented in a very articulate and ideologically committed way. Enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WncN6PWEMGo

As with all History, understanding East-West relations prior to the end, is instructive for understanding them post-war. We have already touched upon this by looking at the global reaction to the 1917 Revolution. For Wednesday, I would like you to:

1. Read pp. 14-15

2. Read p. 38-39 and answer the following questions:

a) How and why did China become Communist?

b) Write a biography of Mao Tse-Tung (sometimes spelt Zedong)

c) How was China’s relationship with the East? (Including the Treaty of Friendship)

d) How was China’s relationship with the West?

e) Why did events in China escalate tension?

3. Extension: watch the following hour long documentary on the Korean War: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYeWURHhr04

Tuesday

1. Collective Security: NATO and the Warsaw Pact

a. Read pp. 44-45

b. Cut out and stick in the table highlighting the differences between the two organisations

c. Why was the Warsaw Pact set up?

d. What was de-Stalinization and how did it impact the Warsaw Pact?

2. Revise for a knowledge test on NATO and the Warsaw Pact

3. Extension: NATO is still in existence and is the UK’s most important military alliance. Over the last twenty years, Poland and Hungary (1999); Romania, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Slovakia and the Baltic countries (2004); Croatia (2009); and Montenegro (2017) have all joined. Conduct some extra research into modern-day NATO, present-day flashpoints, and how the future looks. Begin with this report by The Economist (a weekly Newspaper found in 1934 to support Cobden and Bright’s efforts to repeal the Corn-Laws): How Nato is shaping up at 70 (https://www.economist.com/special-report/2019/03/14/how-nato-is-shaping-up-at-70)

Wednesday

“It took about a year and a half to get back to normal”

“At one point we were going to the White House to meet the President and my seven year old son said, “Again!?”

There is no essential homework for tomorrow’s lesson – but because learning for the sake of learning is a brilliant use of time - please take the opportunity to explore space. I suggest that you start with Commander Hadfield’s rendition of London’s very own spaceman, David Bowie’s Space Oddity. Follow this with his desert island discs (two quotes of which are above) which we listened to in class for two minutes.

· Astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield singing Space Oddity in the International Space Station https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaOC9danxNo

· Chris Hadfield interviewed by Kirsty Young on Desert Island Discs: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06s7y34

Thursday

After this week, there are a mere 11 weeks until the exam. Using the timetable provided and the scheme of work, create a revision timetable between now and mid-May. Use red-yellow-green highlighters to topics, which may need extra attention, and incentivize your study by giving yourself little rewards for meeting revision targets. When I was doing my GCSEs, I really valued having a day off from revision, so I would work very hard Monday to Saturday am, and having met my 25 hour weekly revision target, take the Saturday afternoon and Sunday off.

Friday

Start revising for the June exam.
