Hudson Taylor campaigned for equality for all in sports regardless of sex, how they want to act, or who they want to like. This connects with the Japanese Court Trials because of freedom and equality. Like how a female or gay person may be perceived as inferior in sports, women are looked at as inferior in the Japanese Court Journals. Women of the Japanese Court Journals are inferior in the readings and this is exemplified by them having to serve for their husbands.Lastly, I don’t know many people, especially a masculine athlete, that would be courageous enough to stand up for what he believes in.

Ria D posted about whether women were required to respond to an act done by men in the way society dictates thinks is right. One of the examples in the article was a girl who was asked to prom and turned the guy down. The story was about a guy who said "Alex" was a bitch because she turned down two different guys who asked her to prom. Alex's friend was sticking up for her saying that girls are not required to accept an invitation to something simply because a guy asks her. I agree that it may not make you a bitch, but I believe that it is common curtesy to say yes if a guy asks you. If you can not attend or have prior plans then it is acceptable to decline. This relates to the Japanese Courts because during this time women were not allowed to stand up for themselves and express their belifs. Women have every right to be who they want and do what they want, but also be respectful at the same time.

Ria D. wrote a story about if it makes a girl a bitch if she turns down a guy that put a lot of effort into asking her. The girl turned down two guys who went all out to ask her to prom so everyone thought she was a bitch but in reality it did not make her any less of a good person. I believe guys just expect the girl to say yes if they do something cute because most girls would. However I believe girls today are more willing to serve to guys and throw themselves at them for a certain reasons. This relates to the Japanese Courts because the men expected the women to serve them, but when one women wanted experience life by herself an not serve a man she was looked at differently.

This girl was labeled a huge bitch because she turned down both of the boys that asked her to prom. In our society today, people consider you a bitch if you say no to a guy who put in a ton of work to ask you to a school dance. By the guy asking you to a dance he is saying that he will drive you around that night and pay for your night also. This relates to the Japanese Court Trials because they say that a guy controls a girl. The article shows the exact opposite because the girl has the choice if she wants to go to the dance with him or not.

Ria D. wrote an article about how if a girl turns someone down in a public way they are labeled a "Bitch" even if they don't like the person at all. According to her, society says that she should say yes because the guy asked her in a cute way and just because she would say no it would make her a bitch. This relates to the Japanese Court trials because in the story it talks about how men control girls. This has to do with how the guy wants to go with a girl so he wants her to say yes. Technically he would be controlling her to say yes in a public place so she wouldn't say no. So when the girl took the initiative to say no society labels her as a bitch because of feminism and how men should control women according to the Japanese court trails. So when the women tries to control the situation by saying no it is looked as a bad thing.

Although "F'D Up" blog says that most teen girls probably do not identify themselves as a feminist is because they do not know what one is, I believe that it is simply because they do not agree with everything true feminists believe in. I personally do not believe in the right to an abortion and I am sure other teenage girls feel the same way. Although feminists believe in men and women being equal, they still think that women should have greater protection over sexual harrassment and domestic violence. For this reason, teenage girls may find feminists just to be hypocritical. Feminists believe that women should be independent. However, I know that in my future I want a husband who is still able to support me and my family. In the Japanese Court Journals Murasaki Shikibu wants a man to be able to look out for her future in order to not feel lonely. I feel that several teenage girls probably feel the same way and therefore, do not want to be true feminists.
Basically saying that unless you want to fall under that assumption you must say yes no matter how you feel about the person asking you. So girls are under the pressure that they have to say yes to whoever asks them, even if they dont want to go. This relates to the Japanese court trials because in the trials it states that men have control of a girl, which is somewhat similar to the blog because a guy can ask a girl, and because of the stereotype that a denial means you're a bitch, she either says yes or she is the loser in the grand scheme. I think this is almost a unseen controlling of women and we might not usually have noticed this.

I agree that girls are often pressured into saying yes to going to a dance with a guy. Usually the pressuring is done from the guy's friends but can be from anyone. By saying no, a girl has a "b*tchy" or stuck-up attitude for hurting the guys feeling but most guys would agree that they would rather have the girl say no then them pressuring the girl into going with him and then getting ditched or not having fun at the dance. To prevent the guy not having a good time at the dance, women shouldn't be controlled by men and expectations.

The book "The Cycle " is by Julie Zeilinger. She talks about how the word "Feminism" is a dirty word. "Somehow, teens have the mistaken idea that if you become a feminist, it takes over your life, your personality, everything. For the record: It really doesn’t." This is a quote from someone in the book and this is why she thinks that Feminism is considered a dirty word. Most men are against feminism which is how this excerpt relates to the Japanese Court Journals. Women are considered inferior to men, which is how the women in the Japenese Court Journals feel.
It all depends on how you feel. I also agree with Steven when he says that girls do not want to be stereotyped as a B*tch when they shouldn't be looked at like that.

Ria D. wrote an article talking about how if a girl turns down a boy it labels her a bitch. Society has become a place where even if the girl does not even know the boy she still needs to say yes because of the effort he put in or she will be labeled a bitch. This put girls into an uncomfortable situation because even if the girl does not want a date to the dance she is being pressured into saying yes to a guy she doesn't know or being a bitch which is unfair to the girls. This relates to the Japanese Court trials because the men control the women and pressure the girl into doing what the man wants just how the boy asking the girl to prom pressures the girl into saying yes. Also, how women would want to go to the dance alone and would say no is the same as girls from the Japanese Court trials wanting to live on their own. That was not what the men wanted them to do so they were viewed as an outkast or a "bitch".

Ria. D wrote a story about her friend Alex. Alex was asked to prom by two different boys. When she said no to their offer she was then known as being a Bitch. I believe that guys and the rest of the community expect girls to automatically say yes when they are asked to go somewhere. I disagree with this immensely. For whatever reasons a girl might have, she should not be pressured into doing something that she doesn’t want to do, and could possibly make her uncomfortable. The only person she needs to please is herself. It doesn’t give other people the right to call her names that aren’t true. She did what she thought was best for her and I would do the same thing if I felt like it would be uncomfortable.
This story relates to the Japanese court trials because especially men expected
the women to serve them. Women were not allowed to stand up for themselves and
just followed what the men told them to do. But when the women wanted to
experience life “by herself and not follow “tradition;” in Alex’s case saying
yes to her date, people looked at her differently.

This pressure on girls is unreasonable and unfair, today's society seems to have an issue with empathy. Males cannot seem to understand that no matter how elaborate their method for asking is they deserve nothing. Women deserve to exercise their freedoms without society coming in to dictate their actions. Women need to be more comfortable with letting go of social protocol and just doing as they please until society changes. Standing up for women's rights is important and being given this right to fight against sexism is truly an honor in America. In the Japanese courts, women were not given the right to protest against sexist profiling and were born into a world where men were the dominant sex. The article illustrates the benefits of having the right to protect our rights. Women in the Japanese courts who wanted equality would support the feminist movement, because it makes man an women equal. In my opinion, I don't believe in all the feminist beliefs, but i do believe in the right of equality and the right for women to make their own choices and have equality between men and women.
Women should find their strengths and use it to better themselves and the world. She talks about how stereotypes have defined so many things wrongly and that people should look past them. Times have changed and now women should take a stand in society. Men are not the ruling body anymore. In the Japanese journals, the women felt helpless and felt like they served no purpose. In a society where men was the dominating power, women suffered from emotional problems and felt insignificant to society. Many felt that their only purpose was to look good and be civilized.

As stated in her article, Julie Zeilinger says "Somehow, teens have the mistaken idea that if you become a feminist, it takes over your life, your personality, everything. For the record: It really doesn’t." I believe as a young female adult most women are feminists, they just don't recognize it. I mean think about it; as women we want and strive to meet our goals independently, strive to make a living for ourselves, and provide for ourselves. I know when i was younger my mother would always tell me "you never need a man to do the same job you can do for yourself." In stories we hear about women fighting for equal pay as men and face it even though we are not at the front line of this war we all agree it is right and are pulling for them to win. The women in the Japanese Court were bold and independent unlike the stereotype of their culture. I believe this started the revolution of women breaking away to pursue their goals. Society has changed, no doubt but women should not be afraid to be their own person they don't have to "follow in their mans footsteps."
They had both asked her publicly in a big way that took a lot of effort and because she turned them down, she was referred to as a bitch. This relates to Japanese women who are expected to be servants and to cook and clean for their husbands. Women should always have the ability to make their own decisions. She says that this is because they do not completely understand what a feminist is. In reality when they stand up for themselves and fight the sexism in our society today, they are really in a sense representing exactly what feminism is. Women are afraid to call themselves a feminist because of the way that it may be percieved in society by other people (mainly men). The same thing happened in the court journals where the women did not fight for their rights because they did not want to stand up to the men who were in charge.

Alex had every right to say no. There is no written rule that when a guy asks a girl to do something, that she must say yes. Although a guy could expect a yes if he took a lot of time and effort going into asking her to prom, there is no way that it is an automatic yes. It could of been personal or any other reasons, if she says no, then it is a no. This ties in with the Japanese Court Trials because the women were expected to everything a man has asked them to do. The woman is not expected to ask questions, just to do what they are told. Since Alex went a different path than what society deems is the "normal thing to do", she was automatically looked at differently. In this case, a bitch

I do agree with this but I also interpret this, as the women simply do not want to speak out. They are afraid of either the punishment they will get or the way people will look at them. Even though some agree with it, they do not want to be the one to stand up for the movement and speak for it. This relates to the Japanese Court Journals because the women did not want to speak up for how they felt because of the consequences and labels that puts on them. Instead they will still agree with this idea, but will keep quiet and go along with what the men say because the men have the power and are allowed to punish them if they like.

The author Julie Zeilinger wrote about feminism and about a teenage perspective of feminism. My views on this article is that Julie is a strong women and their is nothing wrong with being feminist. Some feminist like being independent and like to stand up for themselves. If certain people choose to be feminist and call themselves that then i don't think anyone should judge because it's something their interested in and they do other things then just being feminist. No women should be pressured to call themselves a feminist and when they decide to do so it is their choice not yours because you want them too right away. I think that we need some women out there to show how much we matter just like men and not be forgotten. A lot of women don't know how strong and beautiful they are and are insecure about what they look like to other people. Also, I don't think teenage girls identify themselves as feminist because they are young, they don't no how to really be one, and they still want guys to like them and not be lonely. Just like the girl in the Japanese Court journals, Murasaki Shikibu, she was miserable, sad, and lonely without a man in her life.

I really like what you had to say in this story. I agree with every word you had to say because boys do automatically think you have to say yes to what they are asking for. Women should have the right to say yes or no and it doesn't always mean that the guy is ugly; sometimes it is because they know they will be uncomfortable with them, or doesn't want to get into anything. Just because a girl says no doesn't mean she's a bitch or any other bad name, she had her reasons to say what she said. In the Japanese court journals, I really wish women would have been able to stand up for themselves.

Women will stand up for themselves and their beliefs. However, they do not want the label as a 'femininst' because in society it has somewhat of a negative connotation. She talked about how there should be equality between men and women in society. This relates to the Japanese Corrt Journals because the women did not speak up for what they wanted or believed in. They blindly followed and obeyed their men because they feared being labeled and standing out.

I believe that is how the girl that was asked to prom in front of everyone felt when she had turned the guy down. Everyone labeled her as a “bitch” when in reality she was just making her own decision that she felt was best for her. This is very similar to the lady in the Japanese Court Journal.
I don’t think the girl should be labeled as a bitch for turning down the guys. It is her choice whether she wants to go to prom in the first place, let alone with a date. If she doesn’t feel comfortable going to a dance with a boy, even after him going out of his way to ask her, she should not feel like she has to. This

connects to the Japanese court journals because Sei Shonagon said “I hate the sight of ben in their cups”, referring to people who are intoxicated. She says

how she has seen very good people behave like fools while intoxicated, but this just proves that just because you act dumb sometimes or do something that someone else doesn’t approve of, does not mean you are a bad person. You can be a smart and respected person and still have a few drinks every now and then, just like a girl can be a very sweet girl and say no to a boy who asks her to a dance.

I do find it interesting that 8/10 women feel uncomfortable with derogatory terms directed towards them. I am a senior in highschool and you may hear the words "bitch" or "slut" being tossed around in the hallways, at lunch, and even your classroom between students. What people don't know is that women are very offended by these terms and feel alienated when these terms are directed towards them. We need to empower these victims of derogatory terms that even hint at sexual assault and even rape. By being aware of these terms such crimes can be prevented.

Every time someone steps out of the crowd and do something that other people don't do, it makes a huge fuss. It starts with dying your hair green or being fan of Justin Bieber and it applies on dating rules as well. The society tells us, that we should laugh at Justin Bieber just like most of the people around us does. Some people would deny the fact that they actually listen to his music, some people would admit it in public. And that wouldn't stay without response. Because it is something the crowd doesn't do. It is the same with turning a boy down. The society tells us to say yes, and only some girls will find the courage to say no. And people would naturally talk more about those who said no than those who said yes. Because stories with "bad ending" will always be more popular. Girls are bound by social convictions and stepping out of that safe path is like jumping in the middle of mine field.

Lady Sei Shonagon decided not to live at home, faithfully serving her husband, as people expected her to do. She left to live at the Palace instead, she decided not to follow the "unwritten rules" just like every girl that turns a boy down does. That is the similarity I see between this article and the Court Journals

I read the story about how the girl turned down 2 guys that asked her to prom and so that made her a bitch. well for 1 i think that words like bitch or slut, etc are thrown around too often to really take them seriously. But on the other hand, no i do not think that this girl is a bitch because she said no; maybe she was waiting for someone she wanted to go with, or she didn't like those 2 boys. But either way it doesn't matter because that's her prerogative, maybe she's a lesbian, who knows. But either way i think the boys got mad because they got turned down, This relates to the Japanese Court Journals because guys always expect girls to succumb to whatever they say; just like guys expect girls to now. And if girls dont say yes to the guys they get treated badly.

I disagree with Libby's comment about how she should have said yes. Call me a bitch but i don't think a girl should have to go with someone she really doesn't want to just to "be nice." Girls shouldn't have to give up what they truly want just to show some common courtesy. Boys need to grow up and take rejection like a man. If you want to be respectful, just respectfully decline an invitation. Don't settle for what you don't want so someone doesn't call you a bitch. People are gonna be mad no matter what decisions you make, at least make yourself happy!
