CHRISTINA ROSSETTI CONTEXT

Life: Rossetti was born
on December 5 in 1830 and died 1894, she was born into an outstanding family of poets, artists and critics. As the youngest in the family she had a lot to live
up to. Rossetti and her mother tied to support the family by starting up a day
nursery. Rossetti had a close
relationship with her Mother, I believe this was due to her being home schooled which means spending so much time at home that she was constantly with her.
Education: Rossetti was
educated at home by her Mother. Some people argue that in the Victorian times
girls had fewer opportunities than boys. Although for the time period this was
viewed as a popular type of education.

Publication: Rossetti published
some of her work under a fake name. This is a reflection of the Victorian times
as woman weren’t viewed as complete equals to men.

Her views on the
roles of women: Rossetti had many different views on women. Sometimes it would be a biblical idea that women are lower than men and that they should serve them,
whereas sometimes she has a more feminist view where women should have a seat in parliament. She would speak out about the sexual exploitation of women.
Rossetti religious
views: The major factor that influenced Rossetti’s work was her religion.
Throughout the Pre-Raphaelites movement Rossetti, Maria her sister and her
mother kept strong and attended the Christ Church worshipping higher Anglican.
In her poetry God is always present, sometimes in the background or sometimes
in the foreground. Her poems expressed her devotion to god and her religion,
higher Anglican.

Sources Used:

http://www.bl.uk/romantics-and-victorians/articles/christina-rossetti-religious-poetry

http://www.poetryfoundation.org/bio/christina-rossetti

https://prezi.com/j_ugi20fsxt8/christina-rossetti/

http://www.victorianweb.org/authors/crossetti/rossettibio.html

NO THANKYOU, JOHN

-The poem is very negative, the title starts with
a negative word ‘No’ and the poem then starts with a negative line ‘I neversaid I loved you, John’.

-Two other women were mentioned in the poem, ‘Meg
and Moll’ this suggests that he could be two faced.

-The persona of the poem is very negative. They
reflect the mood as being very dark and sad.

-‘?-‘a caesura making a tense pause.

-The persona comes across as someone who is quite
a hard character.

-Christina Rossetti thinks she has more power
than she has.

-The persona is giving off the effort that the character
they play isn’t in love with john, but John is in love with them.

-Christina Rossetti is uses enjambment. I think
she used this due to her trying to express how much the persona doesn’t love
john anymore, to me it shows that the mood might be quite dark and fed up.

-‘Let bygones be bygones’ shows me that the persona
is so fed up with John that she doesn’t care if she hurts him.

Christina Rossetti straight away sets the mood. She uses the
first word of the title ‘No’ to make an impression that she isn’t happy. She mentions
two girls called ‘Meg’ and ‘Moll’ this may suggest that john is being two
faced. That although he is saying how much he loves her maybe he doesn’t as
much as he’s letting on. Rossetti is fed up with the fact John won’t leave her
alone and is doing anything to get him to leave her alone ‘Let bygones be
bygones’. She would patronise him ‘Use your common sense john’ she is trying to
make herself seem superior to him.

MAUDE CLARE

Nell has the power Maude Clare doesn't. Maude Clare is lower chass than Nell and lord and therefore isnt really considere.

Christina Rossetti was born in the Victorian times. Aristocracy was a huge influence on peoples lives, this is reflected in the poem by using the Victorian class system.

The different characters in the poem represents the different class ranking, it can also show Rossettis views on women. The Mother of the lord represents aristocracy and how her views have a big say on what the lord decides to do. Whereas Nell is still upper class but she still as to be approved of by the mother. in contrast Maude Clare represents low class. Her say isnt even considered. I think that the poem Maude Clare was Christina Rossettis way of writting what she views wrong in the world in the Victorian times, and that women still had a view on something even if they were views as lower class.
